Focus timer, with people working next to you

Pick a rhythm, press Start and work. Everyone who has this page open shows up above the timer as an animal with a silly name, so you can see that other people are focusing too. It is free, needs no account and no camera, and works on a phone.

    How to use it

Choose 50/10, 25/5, 52/17, 90/20 or type your own minutes. Press Start. When the focus block ends, a soft sound plays and the break starts by itself; when the break ends, the next block is ready.

The page gives you a random animal name, like Purple Turtle or Ape Workaholic. Press "New animal" until you like yours. Hover over or tap the others to see whether they are focusing or on a break, and how long they have left.

    Which rhythm to pick

25/5 is the Pomodoro Technique by Francesco Cirillo: short blocks, good for tasks you keep putting off. 50/10 gives you time to get deep into one thing and is what we use at Limen. 52/17 comes from DeskTime, which looked at the work habits of the most productive tenth of its users in 2014. 90/20 suits one long, hard task.

None of them is right for everyone. Try one for a day, then change the lengths under "Your own".

Why other people help: body doubling

Working while someone else works nearby is called body doubling, or parallel working. Many people, and many people with ADHD in particular, find it easier to start and to keep going when they are not alone. There is little research on it yet, so treat it as something to try, not a cure.

The animals here are a light version: nobody watches you, nobody talks, you just see that you are not the only one at the desk.

    Working alone in Amsterdam?

Limen is the same idea with real people. Up to 10 people at one table in Amsterdam, Mondays, Fridays + other days: quiet focus blocks, talk in the breaks and at lunch together. The first day is from €15.

    Questions

    Is the focus timer free?

Yes. There is no account, no ad and no paid plan. Limen, a coworking day in Amsterdam, makes it.

Can the others see me or my screen?

No. They see only your animal, its silly name, and whether you are focusing or on a break. No camera, no microphone, no name of your own.

Can I change the 50/10 lengths?

Yes. Pick a preset or choose "Your own" and set a focus block from 1 to 180 minutes and a break from 1 to 60 minutes. The page remembers your choice.

Does the timer keep running in another tab?

Yes. It counts from the clock, not from the screen, so it stays right in a background tab. The tab title shows the time left.

    What is body doubling?

Working while another person works nearby. They do not help with your task; their presence makes it easier to start and to stay with it.

Where can I work with real people in Amsterdam?

At a Limen day: up to 10 people at one table, focus blocks, talk in the breaks and lunch together. The first day is from €15.
